29: Hope

Through this year, there were inconveniences, disturbances, blockages and adversities that have never been experienced before by the current living population. The only other time the word “unprecedented” has been repeated this many times is for a certain individual’s actions over the course of the latter half of the previous decade. However, the only resolute that was heard from every city, country and continent was “Yes, we can”

Yes, we can come together as individuals of different nationalities, cultures, genders, generations, and unite against a threat to humankind.

Yes, we can put commercial and monetary interests aside and ensure to put safety of our patrons on top of our business processes.

Yes, we can forget about us vs them and be all in together. We understand that our small actions will affect everyone, which in turn will affect me.

Yes, we can have good nation leaders and if not, pressurise them to put aside politics and actually listen to logic, science and expert advice.

Yes, we can and have the capability of suppressing all man made fears and vices of terrorism, pollution, greed and bigotry.

Yes, we can give more importance to human values and connections, and find contentedness and purpose of our lives just by being there for each other.

I shall not be naive and believe, even for a second, that humankind will not go back to their usual ways as soon as we come through the other side, and put long-term environment, wellbeing and community progress second to their personal short-term ambitions. The sense of frustration may soon reappear.

However, very importantly, personally, humans of 2020 have re-sparked the most important strength within me – that of hope, that there is still a possibility. Yes, we can.
