8: Taking control

On January 1, 2020, my family and I were at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. We were on my way back to Dubai after a holiday in beautiful Serbia. It was a well-needed break for all the three of us – my wife, son and I. While at the airport, I told my wife: we are in an airport on January 1; it looks like we will have many holidays and travel to do in 2020.

It was not to be. Well, that was the last time I got into a flight.

The year 2020 has not been to the best of our expectations.

I have always believed that some things are beyond our control, and there is no use of worrying about them. However, there are still things in our control and why not make the best use of it. I tried my hand at the latter.

First was to take charge of my health. Over the years, I had turned obese, and the overweight issue was a bother. With work-from-home in place, this was the best time to start eating healthy and get on with a proper exercise regime. Took the advice of a health expert and set out on a getting healthy journey. I set targets and started working towards them. The results were there for everybody to see. The body got back in shape – somewhat. I am feeling healthier and more fit than before. The health journey continues; I am thankful for 2020 for making it happen.

The weight loss journey helped me to do other things I could not earlier. Skydiving was one of them. I wasn’t eligible to perform skydive, as I was on the wrong side of this activity’s weight limit. The news is that I did jump off that Skydive Dubai aircraft in August 2020.

I had time to read and learn in 2020. I completed a long-pending course and signed up for some new online learnings. Generally, I got to read more books in 2020.

In 2020, the flight journeys stopped. The flights of learning and dreaming took off, and I am grateful for that.
